Games for Couples: 30 Games to Play at Home, Sorted by Mood

"Want to play something?" is a better question than "want to watch something?" because you actually have to look at each other. The problem is picking. So this list is sorted by mood, not by type: find the mood you're in tonight, pick one game, and start in the next two minutes. Almost everything here needs only a phone, a deck of cards or nothing at all.

Quick picks by mood:

  • Talk: 36 questions (#1), Would you rather (#3)
  • Laugh: Two truths and a lie (#7), Accent night (#10)
  • Compete: Speed Uno (#12), Higher or lower (#14)
  • Drink: Never have I ever (#19), Power hour for two (#21)
  • Get close: Dare dice (#25), Truth or dare (#27), a dare app on one phone (#30)

Mood: talk (6 games)

For nights when you want to actually hear something new from each other.

1. The 36 questions. The famous list, three sets, increasingly personal. Do one set per night, not all three; the third set is heavy. Works best on the couch with phones face-down.

2. Question games with a twist. Pick any question list and add one rule: the other person has to guess your answer first. The guessing is where the fun is. We collected our favourite lists in question games for couples.

3. Would you rather. Easy to start, hard to stop. Make the options uncomfortable: "a week without your phone or a week without me?"

4. Hot seat. One of you answers anything for five minutes. No passes, but you can answer with a story instead of a fact.

5. Highs and lows, extended. Best moment, worst moment, and one thing you noticed about the other person this week. The third one is what makes it a game.

6. The year in review. Twelve months, one memory each. Take turns. You'll disagree about at least three of them, which is the point.

Mood: laugh (5 games)

7. Two truths and a lie, couple edition. You know each other too well for the basic version, so the lies have to be good. Three rounds each.

8. Charades with your own in-jokes. Only things from your relationship: places you've been, people you both know, that one argument. Nobody else could play this version.

9. Movie pitch. Thirty seconds to pitch a movie starring the two of you. The other one decides if it gets greenlit.

10. Accent night. Everything you say for the next hour, in an accent you can't do. The first one to break pays for dessert.

11. Draw your partner. One minute, eyes open, then one minute eyes closed. Keep the drawings. They get funnier every year.

Mood: compete (7 games)

For couples who keep score. Agree on a prize before you start; "loser does the dishes" works every time.

12. Speed Uno. Normal Uno, but no turns: play as fast as you can. Three rounds, best of three.

13. Card games built for two. Gin rummy, Spit, Crazy Eights. We ranked the ones that actually work with two people in card games for couples.

14. Higher or lower. Flip a card, guess if the next one is higher or lower. Wrong guess, small forfeit. Playable with cards or with a free online version in your browser; see online games for couples.

15. Rock paper scissors, best of 21. Sounds dumb. Gets intense by round 15.

16. The cooking challenge. Same ingredients, two plates, twenty minutes. The loser cleans.

17. Trivia about each other. Ten questions each, written in secret. Favourite childhood meal, first concert, the name of that teacher. Lowest score makes breakfast.

18. Phone-free hour. Whoever touches their phone first loses. The most competitive game on this list for some couples.

Mood: drink (4 games)

Adults only, and the second rule is to stop while it's still fun.

19. Never have I ever. Classic for a reason. Couple version: only things from before you met.

20. Drink while you think, names edition. Celebrities whose first name starts with the last letter of the previous one. Keep sipping until you've got one.

21. Power hour for two. One small sip a minute for an hour, with a song change every minute. Make the playlist together; that's half the game.

22. The rest of the list. Fifteen more, with the ones to skip, in drinking games for couples.

Mood: get close (8 games)

For adults 18+. The only rule that matters: play what you both said yes to, skip anything else without explaining.

23. The slow game. Twenty minutes, one of you leads, the other only follows. Switch next time. Our 20-minute version is in what to play in bed in 20 minutes.

24. Bedroom games with actual rules. Not just "be romantic": games with turns, timers and forfeits. The full set is in bedroom games for couples.

25. Dare dice. One die picks an action, the other picks where. Simple, fast, and it decides for you. How to play with real dice or a phone: how to play sex dice.

26. Dares for couples. A list of dares sorted from mild to hot, so you can start wherever you both are: dares for couples.

27. Spicy truth or dare. The teenage game, upgraded. Questions and dares that are actually worth asking: spicy truth or dare for couples.

28. Sex games, 15 of them. If you want the full range from warm-up to hot in one place: sex games for couples.

29. Hotel room edition. Away for the weekend? A different room changes the game. Hotel room games for couples.

30. Let a dare app choose. When neither of you wants to be the one who suggests it, a game on one phone decides. Pick the heat, pass the phone, do the dare. TwoNite runs in your browser with no account, or on iOS and Android. If you want to compare apps first, we did that in best couples game apps compared.

How to pick a game for tonight

  • Low energy? Talk games. They work lying down.
  • One of you is annoyed at the other? Laugh games, not compete games.
  • Want to end up closer? Start with a talk game, then move to "get close". Jumping straight to the end feels like a transaction.
  • Have a deck of cards and nothing else? #12, #13, #14, #17.
  • Have only your phones? #2, #3, #14, #30.

FAQ

What are good games for couples to play at home?

Pick by mood. For talking, the 36 questions or a question game. For laughing, two truths and a lie or charades with your own in-jokes. For competing, speed Uno or higher or lower. For getting close, dare dice or a dare app on one phone. All of these need at most a deck of cards or a phone.

What games can couples play with just a phone?

Would you rather, question games, higher or lower (free in the browser), and dare games on one phone like TwoNite. Nothing to download for the first three; TwoNite also runs in a browser.

What are fun games for couples without buying anything?

Twenty of the thirty games here need no purchase: the talk games, the laugh games, rock paper scissors, phone-free hour, never have I ever, and the slow game. A deck of cards covers most of the rest.

What games help couples get closer?

Games that make you choose, not just answer: would you rather, dares, dare dice. The structure removes the awkward "who suggests it" step, which is usually the real barrier.

Are games for couples only for date night?

No. The best ones take five minutes on a weeknight: hot seat, highs and lows, rock paper scissors best of 21. Save the long ones (36 questions, cooking challenge) for a free evening.

Which games are for adults only?

The drink section and the "get close" section (#19 to #30). Everything else is fine for any couple. Related: How to spice things up in the bedroom
