The Three Words

Part 59 · constraint

The rule: Every question tonight gets answered in exactly three words. The fourth word costs a kiss.

The Three Words is one of the bed games with actual rules from our TikTok series (part 59). It needs two adults, one bed and nothing else. Below: how to set it up, how a round goes, how to play it at four levels from mild to extreme, the mistakes that break it, and three variations for the second night.

Setup

You need questions. Use the ones you already want to ask, a list you made earlier, or the question cards in the TwoNite game. Agree what a kiss is tonight before the first question.

How to play

  1. Player one asks a question. Any question.
  2. Player two answers in exactly three words. Not two, not four.
  3. If the answer is four words or more, the fourth word costs a kiss — paid immediately, where the asker chooses.
  4. Swap. Player two asks.
  5. Ten questions each. Count the kisses at the end; the one who paid more picks what happens next.

Four levels

  • Mild: Questions about the day, the week, the small stuff. Three-word answers are funny here. "Pasta, probably, again."
  • Spicy: Questions about the two of you. "What did you notice?" "Where did you want?" Three words gets hard fast.
  • Hot: Questions about tonight, asked directly. Three words is just enough to answer and not enough to hide.
  • Extreme: Questions you'd never ask in daylight. Three-word answers, no fourth word allowed — a fourth word here isn't a kiss, it's the asker choosing the dare.

What breaks it

  • Counting contractions as two words. "Don't" is one. Settle it before you start.
  • Asking yes/no questions. They waste the three words.
  • Paying the kiss later. Immediately means immediately.

Variations

  • The one-word night: every answer is one word. Second word costs the kiss.
  • The three-word story: alternate three-word answers until they make a story. The story is the dare.
  • The coin and the count: flip a coin before each question — heads, three words; tails, thirty.

The matched list

Every game on this page assumes one thing: you both already said yes to it. If you want the version where that happens on the screen first — each of you picks privately, the game only plays what you both chose — that's the TwoNite dare game. It runs in the browser on one phone, no account. The Three Words works as a house rule on top of it.

FAQ

What kind of questions work best in The Three Words?

Open ones that would normally take a paragraph. The fun is watching someone compress it.

What if someone refuses to answer?

Refusing is three words: "I won't say." The asker gets to ask a different one.

Can we use the TwoNite question cards?

Yes — the Questions for Couples page on this site draws them by level, mild to extreme, so you can match the night.
