No Peeking
A couple who know everything about each other except how to ask. They try a couples intimacy game in which each partner chooses privately on one phone; whatever only one of them picked never comes up, so nobody has to refuse anything out loud.
"Promise you won't judge me."
Alex laughed. "That is an extremely concerning way to start a date."
Sophie was sitting opposite him on the bed, holding his phone against her chest. "I'm serious."
"About a game?"
"About my answers."
They had been together for almost three years. They knew each other's coffee orders, passwords, worst habits, and exactly how long the other could pretend not to be annoyed. But Sophie had discovered there was still a strange gap between knowing someone and having to tell them what you wanted.
Sophie hated the word no. Not hearing it — saying it. She could turn down a restaurant or a holiday without thinking twice, but when something felt personal, a no suddenly weighed more than it should. Alex knew this, which meant he sometimes didn't ask. That wasn't particularly useful either.
Earlier that evening she had searched for a couples intimacy app and found mostly homework: questionnaires, relationship scores, daily exercises. She didn't want homework. She wanted a game.
A friend had mentioned TwoNite months ago, in the tone people use for things they don't want to explain. The premise turned out to be simple. Each person privately chooses what they're comfortable with. The phone keeps the two lists just long enough to find the overlap. Anything only one of them chose disappears — no rejection, no explanation, no why did you pick that?
Alex reached for the phone. "You're taking forever."
Sophie pulled it away. "No peeking."
He raised both hands.
She went through the list. Yes. No. Yes. She stopped on one, thought about it, and left it off. Nobody asked why. That was the whole point.
When she finished, she handed it over and deliberately looked toward the window. She could hear him tapping. Then nothing. Then tapping again.
"You hesitated."
"You're literally monitoring my tapping."
"I heard a hesitation."
"You're impossible."
Eventually he handed the phone back. No scores. No compatibility percentage. No list of where they disagreed. The game simply began with whatever they had both said yes to.
Sophie had expected the interesting part to be discovering what Alex wanted. It wasn't. The interesting part was discovering how many things they had both wanted without ever mentioning them. Some were funny. Some were romantic. A few made both of them suddenly much quieter.
At one point Alex looked up. "Did you actually choose this?"
Sophie shrugged. "Maybe."
"The game says we both did."
"Then I guess you've answered your own question."
A few rounds later something occurred to her. "How many things did you say no to?"
Alex laughed. "I'm not telling you."
"Exactly."
She hadn't realised how freeing that would be. Neither of them had to defend a boundary, because the boundary never became part of the conversation. A no stayed private. A yes only mattered when there were two of them.
Alex reached for the phone. "Next."
Sophie stopped him. "One condition."
"What?"
"No peeking."
