The Whisper Chain

The rule: Whisper one word in their ear. They add one and whisper it back. The sentence ends as a dare.

The Whisper Chain is one of the bed games with actual rules from our TikTok series (part 72). It needs two adults, one bed and nothing else. Below: how to set it up, how a round goes, how to play it at four levels from mild to extreme, the mistakes that break it, and three variations for the second night.

Setup

Faces close, lights low. No talking above a whisper for the whole game. Decide a maximum sentence length before you start — twelve words is a good first game.

How to play

1. Player one whispers one word. Any word. "Tonight."
2. Player two whispers the sentence back with one word added. "Tonight, you."
3. Keep passing it. Each turn repeats the whole sentence and adds one word.
4. When the sentence reaches the agreed length, it's a dare. The last person to add a word performs it.
5. If the sentence stops making sense, start over. Nonsense is not a dare.

Four levels

• Mild: Sentences that end in a kiss, a touch or a sentence said aloud. First word rule: start with a soft one.
• Spicy: First word is a body part. The sentence has to end somewhere on it.
• Hot: Sentences describe something that happens in the next five minutes, in full. Last word added, dare starts.
• Extreme: Twenty-word limit, no word may be repeated, and the dare is performed exactly as written — including the awkward grammar.

What breaks it

• Adding two words. One. The chain is slow on purpose.
• Steering too early. If the sentence is obvious by word four, the last eight are boring.
• Breaking the whisper. The volume is part of the rule.

Variations

• The blind chain: eyes closed, so every word arrives by ear only.
• The double chain: two sentences at once, one each, built in alternating turns. Both end as dares.
• The morning chain: start it in bed at night, finish it over coffee. The dare is for the evening.

What if we can't agree what the sentence means?

The last person to add a word interprets it. That's the risk of being last.

Does the dare have to be sexual?

The game doesn't say. Most chains get there by word eight on their own.

How long does a chain take?

A twelve-word chain is about three minutes. The dare is the rest of the night.
