Anniversary Ideas That Aren't Dinner

There's nothing wrong with dinner. But if you've been together long enough to have an anniversary worth counting, you've done the restaurant script enough times to know how it ends: you're home by ten, full, and scrolling. This year, try one of these instead. Planning for February instead? See our Valentine's games for couples at home.

Recreate year one

Go back to the place you met, order what you ordered, retell the story badly. The point isn't accuracy — it's remembering who you were before the mortgage.

Write the year in review

Two glasses of something, two pieces of paper. Each of you writes: best moment of the year, hardest moment, one thing you want more of. Trade papers. This one costs nothing and couples remember it for years.

Book a hotel in your own city

You don't need a flight to feel away. A hotel room fifteen minutes from home has the same magic ingredients: no chores in sight, a bed nobody has to make, and nowhere to be until checkout. Pack properly — we wrote a whole packing list for couples that covers the non-obvious part.

Make the evening a game

An anniversary is exactly the night to skip the "so what do you want to do" negotiation. A couples game gives the night a structure: you play, the game leads, and the evening escalates at whatever pace you both choose. If you both set your limits first, the game only ever deals what you're both into — which is what makes it work for an anniversary instead of against it.

The gift that isn't a thing

Skip the object. Give a coupon book you actually intend to honor, a playlist of every song that mattered, or the promise of one full day where the other person decides everything. Things gather dust; evenings don't.

Whatever you do — protect the night

The only real anniversary failure is treating it like a Tuesday. Book the sitter, silence the phones, and give the evening a beginning, a middle and an end. The dinner is optional. The ending isn't.
